Let's face it, this Winter has been the pits. Even the staunchest snow lovers are throwing their hands up in disgust. Record snowfalls have been recorded all over the country. There was even a day that 49 states had snow somewhere on the ground. That had never happened before. Never.
This is the worst time of Winter, when spring restlessness starts to creep into the mixture. There are signs of spring. The birdsong sounds a little louder, doesn't it? Are those buds beginning to form on that branch? I have the desire to spring, but the snow and the cold and wind stop me. It's torturous.
Spring is a time for action. Winter is a time for inner work. I've made " in like a lion out like a lamb" my mantra this winter. Here we are on March 1st and then . . . Spring. Renewal.

With 50s and 60s in our 2-week forecast, we should be hearing peepers very soon. Exciting!!!
The buds are swelling on the silver maples!
Time for me to get out last year's garden notes and start figuring out this year's plan.
I used to think that spring was the time when we could put the jackets away, and sit on the porch comfortably. I've found that to be rushing things. Spring has become the time of the year when things really begin to just start growing. It's muddy; it's cool; it rains a lot and even snows, but it's not that barren winter time. The most noticeable difference is in the birds' songs.
The glare on the road is different. The grass begins to green. Trees in the distance have a red glow as the sap begins to flow. Wild onions take off. Birds start claiming boxes and gather nesting material.
I used to think we didn't really get a spring, but that's because I just didn't notice it. I thought it was still winter, then it was too hot and summer had hit. I'm loving this spring... Oh, did I ever need it after all these days of clouds and snow.
Summer is something we can appreciate from a distance, but spring begins as an up close and personal down on the hands and knees thing for me.
